Type 410S is a low carbon, non-hardening version of Type 410 stainless steel. This general-purpose stainless steel remains soft and ductile even when rapidly cooled. Other key benefits of Type 410S include:
- Weldable by most common techniques
- Good resistance to oxidation
- Continuous services up to 1300°F (705°C)
- Similar corrosion resistance to Type 410, good in fresh water and mild organic and mineral acids
It is important to note that Type 410S has a lower carbon level than Type 410. In order to be considered Type 410S, a stainless steel must have the following chemical properties:
- Fe balance
- Cr 11.5-14.5%
- Ni 0.60% max
- C 0.08% max
- Mn 1% max
- P 0.040% max
- S 0.030% max
- Si 1% max
Because of its unique properties and chemical composition, Type 410S is useful for a variety of applications in a large range of critical industries including:
- Petroleum refining
- Petrochemical processing
- Thermal processing
- Gate valves
- Press plates
- Heat exchangers
- Ore processing and mining machinery
